In Honor and In Loving Memory of Joanne Yahiro

On May 13, 2015 at E.A. Hall Middle School a cherry tree was planted in honor of

Joanne Yahiro (who passed away earlier this year) and her service for the improvement of our schools.

Joanne attended E.A. Hall Middle School as a child, her children attended there, and she was instrumental in many

positive changes there and in the school district.

Ichiro Sam Sugidono passed away on May 12, 2015.

In Honor and In Loving Memory of Ichiro is the following article from 2010:

Ichiro Sam Sugidono Inducted Into the

Watsonville High School Hall of Fame

In a moving ceremony on Friday, May 21st 2010, long-time Westview member Ichiro Sam Sugidono was among three others who were inducted into Watsonville High School’s Hall of Fame. He was introduced to the audience by a very close and dear friend who shared with the audience parts of Ichiro’s life story, including his experiences at the internment camp in Poston, Arizona and his participation in the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team for which he earned the bronze star and purple heart. The audience, made up mostly of high school students, was so moved by Ichiro’s story that they gave him an overwhelming standing ovation. Ichiro’s son Fred (pictured above) gave a moving acceptance speech for his dad. It was an outstanding and well-deserved tribute.

Ichiro married after the War and has four children – Fred, Randy, Karen, and Michael – six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. All of his children and grandchildren attended and graduated from Watsonville High School, and many still live in Watsonville today. The family business (what was now the H&S Garage on Front Street near lower Main in Watsonville) that Sam nurtured for 40 years is sill run today by his sons at its longtime location on Front Street near Main in Watsonville.

Congratulations Ichiro Sam Sugidono!!
